How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

Welcoming a new little one into your family is such a special time. These sessions aren’t just about the baby—they’re about your whole family embracing this new chapter. I love capturing parents soaking in those quiet moments, siblings peeking in with curiosity, and the tiny details that make this time so special.

Typically these sessions take place either in your home or in a studio space. A little preparation can make all the difference! Here are some tip to help you and baby have a stress-free and successful newborn session!

SLEEPY BABY

  • KEEP BABY AWAKE BEFORE THE SESSION — If possible, try to keep your baby awake for a little while before the session. This will help them be nice and sleepy, making it easier to capture lots of photos of baby with parents and siblings

  • FEED BABY RIGHT BEFORE THE SESSION — A full belly means a happy, sleepy baby! If possible, time the feeding so that it happens right before you leave for a studio session or just before your photographer arrives for an in-home session. That being said, I completely understand that babies have their own rhythms, and if things don’t go exactly as planned, that’s totally okay! We can always pause to feed baby if needed.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE YOUR NEWBORN SESSION

  • WHEN BABY IS 1-2 WEEKS OLD — Newborns change so quickly! The ideal time for a session is within the first two weeks, when babies are sleepiest and most likely to stay curled up for those sweet, snuggly photos.

  • TIME OF DAY — Most newborn sessions are best held indoors. Aim for morning or afternoon when the light is best. If the session is in your home, think about the times when the rooms you plan to use get the most light. Also, consider your other kiddos’ routines—naps and meal times—so they’re at their happiest and most relaxed during the session.

WHAT TO BRING

  • PACIFIER (IF BABY TAKES ONE) — A pacifier can help soothe your baby and make transitions between poses easier.

  • EXTRA ESSENTIALS — Bring extra wipes, diapers, and outfits—because babies love those surprises!

  • SPECIAL PROPS — If you have a sentimental item, like a handmade blanket, stuffed animal, or a letter board with baby’s name, feel free to bring it along to make your photos extra special.

  • SNACKS & ENTERTAINMENT FOR SIBLINGS — Newborn sessions can take time, so bring snacks, water, and a small toy or tablet to keep siblings occupied when they’re not in photos.

  • BLANKETS — I like doing a mix of baby wrapped up and cozy in blankets and also in their cute little outfits. If you have any blankets or wraps you love be sure to bring those to add you own style to the session. If not, no worries, I always have wraps and blankets that I will bring!

WHAT TO WEAR

  • FOR PARENTS & SIBLINGS — Stick with soft, neutral colors and avoid bold patterns to keep the focus on the baby. Coordinating tones without being too matchy is a great way to create a timeless look. Textured fabrics like linen, knit, or soft cotton add depth to your photos without being distracting.

  • FOR BABY — Simple is best! Solid sleepers, onesies, or knotted gowns, linen overalls, little dresses work beautifully. Avoid clunky or stiff clothing like jeans, outfits with too many buttons or zippers, as they can be uncomfortable for the baby and make posing more difficult. If your session is in a studio, I have a variety of soft, neutral wraps that will complement whatever outfits you choose for yourself.

  • CHOOSE COMFORTABLE, TIMELESS OUTFITS — Wear something that makes you feel good and comfortable. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and neutral layers photograph beautifully and add a timeless, cozy feel to your images. Remember, you’ll be postpartum during your session, so choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident

  • BARE FEET & NATURAL LOOKS — Clients often ask what shoes to wear for an in-home session, and the truth is—bare feet almost always look best! Going barefoot helps create a cozy, natural look that fits the relaxed, intimate feel of newborn sessions. If you prefer to wear something, opt for soft, neutral socks or simple slippers rather than bulky shoes.

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • LIFESTYLE — My newborn sessions are lifestyle-focused, meaning I’m going to capture the connection between you and your baby rather than intricate, highly posed images a lot of people expect with newborn session. If you’ve scrolled through all these photos you get the vibe. There will be lots of family snuggles and natural moments!

  • GO WITH THE FLOW — Babies run the show, and that’s okay! A big portion of the session will involve changing baby, taking breaks to soothe or feed them, and allowing time for cuddles. If your little one needs extra time to settle, we’ll pause as needed, ensuring a relaxed and comfortable experience everyone. There’s no rush!

HAVE FUN!

Your newborn session should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Once you arrive, sit back, take a deep breath, and let me handle the details. My goal is to create a calm, stress-free environment where you can simply enjoy these moments with your baby. We’ll capture beautiful and meaningful imagery that you will get to look back on as your little one grows.
